REED Academy is a private non-profit school for children with autism spectrum disorders. REED is committed to providing children with a highly individualized educational program that incorporates science-based, applied behavior analytic intervention technologies. Our primary goal is to maximize each student’s abilities to function with the greatest degree of independence possible. Wherever possible, we strive to prepare students to return to a general education classroom in their home school district.
REED Academy is certified by the New Jersey Department of Education and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Our certification enables us to serve students from 3 to 21. Current students at REED are between three and thirteen years old. As our student population ages, REED will ultimately accommodate older students. Our future plans include the development of an adult services program.
Each student's program is highly individualized and consists of from 30 to 50 objectives that are linked to statewide standards. Instruction is done 1:1. As students progress in developing social, self-help, recreational, and academic skills, this ratio is reduced to better prepare students to participate in school and community activities with greater independence.
REED is administered by its Executive Director with the assistance of the School Principal, Clinical Director, Assistant Director and Classroom Consultants who serve as lead teachers and who oversee each child’s curriculum. In addition, a Head Teacher who is a New Jersey certified Teacher of the Handicapped is assigned to each classroom. The Executive Director, Clinical Director, Assistant Director, and two Classroom Consultants are Board Certified Behavior Analysts. Five of the lead teachers and administrators are master’s level educators. The Executive Director holds a doctorate in education. The remainder of the staff is comprised of trained instructional aides with a minimum of a bachelor's degree.
The school year at REED is 180 days long. REED also offers an extended school year which operates for 30 days the summer. Our day runs from 9am to 2:45pm Monday-Friday.
