When
a child with autism enters our school program, we make a commitment to the
education of that child. The balance of that education will occur within
the school, but the nature of autism generally means that the child will
also need additional teaching to be a contributing and happy part of her
or his family. For that reason we offer family consultation services to
teach appropriate life and self help skills in all areas of the child’s
life.
Our vision for the future includes the growth and
expansion of our program to serve people with autism across a broader age
span. In the short term, we will begin offering Early Intervention
services to children diagnosed with autism who are under three years old.
Longer term, we anticipate meeting some of our students’ eventual need for
assisted adult living through the establishment of group homes. Behavioral
interventions and technologies are the keys to fostering the greatest
possible independence and self-direction of people with autism of all
ages. |
